Genuine MAN water-cooled exhaust elbow for the D2840 LE301. As the internal wall corrodes, the point at which water meets exhaust gas moves closer to the engine — and eventually water reaches a cylinder through an open exhaust valve. Water does not compress. The result is a bent connecting rod or a cracked piston in the moment of the next start attempt, on an engine that was running normally the day before. That mechanism is why the elbow is a scheduled replacement and not a monitored one.
