Genuine MAN crankshaft timing gear for the D2862 LE463, D2862 LE422 and D2868 LE433, in the coolant pump drive position. Gears in a diesel timing train are cut to tight tolerances because the train does more than open valves: on this generation of MAN engines the same gears carry the injection pump drive, so backlash that accumulates through tooth wear shifts injection timing as well as valve timing. The symptoms arrive in the wrong order for easy diagnosis — slightly harder starting, a change in smoke on load, a fractional loss of power — long before the noise from the front of the engine becomes obvious enough to send anyone looking behind the timing cover. Where a gear is being replaced for wear rather than damage, examine everything it meshes with before deciding the job is finished.
