Supplied as an assembly rather than a bare shaft, so the parts that have to be matched to it arrive together instead of being reconciled on the bench — useful on a V12, where the number of journals multiplies any mismatch in clearance. Because each rod journal here serves an opposing pair of cylinders, rod-bearing clearance is worth measuring individually and never assumed from the set, and plastigauge across every journal costs an hour against the alternative of finding one tight shell after the engine has run. The other thing to settle before the assembly goes in is why the previous shaft came out: journal damage is generally the last event in a sequence that began with the oil, and a replacement fitted into an unresolved oil-supply problem has a short future.
