Genuine MAN crankshaft for the D2868, the 90-degree V8 covering 441 to 956 kW. That spread is unusually wide for one block, and it is worth knowing that the crankshaft is carrying firing loads at the top of it — a shaft specified for the highest-rated build is not doing light work in a lower-rated one, but the reverse is not something to assume when sourcing. Where a shaft has history behind it, the order of checks matters: crack-test first, measure second. A shaft that passes on dimensions but carries a fatigue crack is the expensive mistake, because the measurement stage says nothing about it and the crack is what ends the shaft's life — reclaiming worn journals by machining is routine, but no amount of machining removes a crack. On an engine that has spent its life near the top of its rating, that first check is not a formality.
