Genuine MAN crankshaft for the D2840 V10, supplied with Bureau Veritas approval. Approval and inspection are not quite the same thing — approval attaches to the design and its manufacturing route, inspection to the individual item — and MAN lists both forms against this engine, which is worth noting when a survey requires one specifically rather than class paperwork in general. The practical advice is to read the requirement before ordering: a surveyor asking for evidence that this particular shaft was examined is not satisfied by a certificate covering the design, and the reverse substitution fails just as readily. Mechanically it is the standard V10 crankshaft, with no difference in geometry, material or service life — the certification is what the operator is paying for, and it has value only where a class requirement exists to meet. Vessels outside class get the same engineering from the uncertified number at lower cost, which is why MAN keeps the two in the catalogue side by side rather than certifying the whole production run.
