First-stage thrust bearing in the sputtered specification for the D2842 LE443 and D2848 LE422. On a V12 the crankshaft is long and heavy, and its axial position matters to a great many things downstream. Endfloat measured and recorded at the rebuild gives the next engineer a baseline, which on a component that wears slowly over decades is the only way to know whether a later reading represents wear or was always that way.
