Genuine MAN flywheel for the D2848 LE422, the 90-degree V8. Flywheel bolts are a torque-critical joint working in shear and tension simultaneously, and they are among the fasteners most often reused where they should not be. Many engines specify single-use bolts here because they are tightened into their yield range, and a reused bolt may not produce the clamp load that keeps the flywheel located against the crankshaft flange. A flywheel that has worked loose damages both the flange and itself, usually beyond recovery. Follow the specified tightening procedure and replace the bolts where MAN calls for it rather than assessing them by appearance. Where the specification is unclear, new bolts are the inexpensive side of the decision by a wide margin.
