Genuine MAN big-end bearing shells in standard size for the D2862 LE463, LE422 and D2868 LE433. Where bearings are being renewed as part of an overhaul and not after a failure, keep the old shells and read them. Bearing wear patterns are among the most informative diagnostics an engine produces: even wear across the set indicates ordinary service life, wear concentrated at one end of a shell points at a bent rod or a misaligned journal, localised scoring indicates debris, and a polished or wiped area suggests the film broke down under load. Laying the set out in cylinder order before cleaning them costs nothing and occasionally changes the scope of the rebuild. Photograph them in order before cleaning; the record costs nothing and occasionally settles an argument about why the engine failed.
