Genuine MAN piston for the D2862 LE463 and D2868 LE433. When an engine is being rebuilt, the decision about pistons is usually made by the condition of the bores rather than of the pistons themselves — because a piston is only correct in relation to the cylinder it runs in. Where liners are being renewed, standard pistons go with them; where bores are being machined, the piston size has to correspond to the finished bore. That is the practical reason to measure and decide the machining before ordering pistons, rather than ordering pistons and then asking the machine shop to work to them. Order pistons after the machining decision is made, not before, and keep the machine shop's measured figures with the engine records.
