On a V10 the number of cylinders makes consistency across the set the governing consideration: ten cylinders machined to the same finished dimension and fitted with pistons of the same size step produce an engine that runs evenly, whereas a mixed set does not. Where only some cylinders have needed reclaiming, discuss with the machine shop whether taking all of them to the same step is the better answer, since the cost difference is modest against having the block in the shop at all.
