Genuine MAN torsional vibration damper for the D2840 LE301, MAN's V10. Cylinder count drives how much damping an engine actually needs, and ten cylinders in a V produce firing intervals that are less evenly spaced than a V8's or a V12's — which makes the torsional excitation on this crankshaft harder to balance out and calls for a substantially more substantial damper than the in-line sixes in the same family use. That is why the unit for this engine is not interchangeable with the physically similar-looking dampers elsewhere in the range even where the mounting appears comparable: the inertia is matched to the engine's specific vibration signature, not to the bolt pattern. Damping capacity falls away with age regardless of hours, so on an engine of this size the damper belongs on the overhaul list rather than the inspection list.
