Genuine MAN ship management computer with displays for the D2842 LE443 and D2848 LE422. This is a level above the engine control unit and not a substitute for it: the engine ECU governs fuelling and protection, while the ship management computer gathers data from the engine or engines and presents it to the operator, handling display, alarms and logging. Confusing the two leads to expensive mistakes, because a fault in the display layer can make a perfectly healthy engine appear to be in trouble. Where readings look implausible — a temperature that jumps, a pressure that reads zero while the engine runs normally — suspect the monitoring chain before the engine. Checking the sensor and its wiring before the engine is a cheaper sequence than the reverse and is right more often than not.
