Genuine MAN starter for the D2842 LE443, the current number for the application. On a large engine the starter draws very high current for the seconds it operates, and the cables and connections carrying that current are as much a part of the starting system as the motor. Cable that has corroded internally under intact insulation, or a terminal that has been disturbed repeatedly, adds resistance that appears as a starter turning slowly. Since replacing a starter is considerably more expensive than replacing a cable, measuring the voltage drop across each connection while cranking is the first step rather than the last. Replacing a main cable costs a fraction of a starter and resolves a surprising proportion of slow-cranking complaints.
