Genuine MAN tube bundle for the D2840 LE301. A useful check when a bundle is out is to look at what the raw water side has been carrying: silt and fine sand indicate operation in shallow or estuarine water and argue for shortening the cleaning interval, while hard white scale indicates the engine has been running hotter than it should for long enough to deposit it. The second finding is more significant, because scale forms as a consequence of overheating rather than as a cause of it, and it means the original problem lies elsewhere in the cooling system. Clean the bundle, but find the reason. Photograph the tube ends before cleaning them, since the deposit pattern is evidence that the cleaning process destroys.
