Genuine MAN tube bundle for the D2842 LE443, the 21.9-litre V12. On a large engine the bundle is a substantial and expensive component, and its life is determined almost entirely by maintenance , and not by hours: anodes renewed on schedule, the raw water strainer kept clear, and the bundle cleaned before fouling becomes heavy. A bundle that has been allowed to scale up heavily is harder to clean successfully and may not recover its original heat transfer even after cleaning. Treating it as a scheduled item rather than a component to address when temperatures rise is straightforwardly cheaper over the life of the engine. On an engine of this size the bundle is also heavy enough that removing it single-handed is how end plates get damaged.
