Genuine MAN intermediate gear for the coolant pump drive on the D2862 LE463, LE422 and D2868 LE433. An intermediate gear transfers drive between two gears that cannot mesh directly, and it carries the loads of both meshes while running on its own bearing or spindle. That makes its bearing a wear point independent of its teeth, and a worn spindle produces backlash and noise that is easily attributed to the pump it drives. Check the spindle and bearing as well as the tooth flanks whenever this gear is accessible, since the two fail independently and the labour of reaching them is identical. Spindle wear also produces noise that changes with engine speed rather than with load, which distinguishes it from most pump faults.
