This is the wearing heart of a raw water pump: a moulded elastomer rotor whose vanes bend as they pass the pump's offset wall, drawing sea water through the engine's cooling circuit. It is the one component on a marine diesel that can be destroyed in under a minute — a closed seacock or a blocked strainer removes the water that both cools and lubricates it.
