Genuine MAN crankcase assembly for the D2842 LE443. Before committing to a crankcase, the alternative worth pricing is a complete long block, because the labour of building an engine onto a bare casting is substantial and much of it duplicates what a long block already includes. The calculation turns on what else needs replacing: where the crankshaft, pistons and heads are all serviceable, the casting alone can make sense, and where several of them are not, the long block usually wins. Establish the condition of the rotating assembly before the decision rather than during the rebuild. Measuring the crankshaft and the bores before deciding turns that comparison into arithmetic rather than instinct.
