Genuine MAN timing case for the D2840 LE301. Sealing a timing case at reassembly is a job where the preparation matters more than the sealant: old gasket material removed completely without scoring the faces, both surfaces clean and dry, and the correct product used where MAN specifies a sealant rather than a gasket. Thread sealant and gasket compound are not interchangeable, and a case sealed with whatever was to hand tends to leak slowly enough that the fault is not attributed to the work that caused it. Where the specification calls for a particular product, it is specifying a cure behaviour rather than a brand. Where the original specification cannot be established, a supplier familiar with these engines will know which product the joint expects.
