Genuine MAN MASTER engine control unit, electronic diesel control, for the D2842 LE443. This engine runs a pair of control units instead of one, and the MASTER is the unit that holds the governing authority — the SLAVE exists so that a single electronic failure does not stop the engine. That architecture is a marine design decision, not a performance one: an engine that stops because a control unit has failed is an inconvenience on a road vehicle and a serious situation on a working boat. When ordering, the MASTER and SLAVE are distinct part numbers and are not interchangeable, so establish which unit has failed before ordering. Control units are also normally matched to the engine by programming, which makes fitting a commissioning task, not a plug-in replacement.
