Genuine MAN drive gear for the high-pressure fuel pump on the D2842 LE443 and D2848 LE422. This gear takes the pump's drive from the engine's timing train, which ties injection timing to the mechanical condition of that train rather than to the pump alone — tooth wear produces backlash, and backlash allows the pump's angular position to drift relative to the crankshaft under changing load. The effects are subtle and arrive in an unhelpful order: slightly harder starting, a change in smoke, and a loss of efficiency that shows on fuel consumption before it shows anywhere else. Measuring backlash against specification is the assessment that matters, since wear of this order is not visible on inspection.
