Genuine MAN high-pressure fuel pump for the D2848 LE builds, the 90-degree V8. The pump raises fuel to injection pressure and is driven from the engine's own gear train, and its internal components are lubricated by the fuel passing through them rather than by engine oil. That single design fact accounts for most of what goes wrong: clean diesel carries just enough lubricity to keep the precision surfaces apart, water displaces it directly, and particulate contamination abrades what it was protecting. The damage then propagates, because metal shed by a wearing pump travels downstream at pressure into the injectors. A pump failure discovered late is rarely a pump-only repair, which is why the filtration and the water separator deserve attention before the replacement is fitted , and not after. Sampling the fuel at the filter housing before the new pump goes on turns an assumption about contamination into evidence, and costs almost nothing.
