Genuine MAN high-pressure fuel pump for the D2840 LE builds. Symptoms that point here overlap almost completely with symptoms produced by cheaper components — hard starting, rough idle, smoke, falling power and worsening consumption are produced by filters, the lift pump, injectors and air leaks just as readily as by the high-pressure pump. Since this is the most expensive item on that list, it belongs last in the elimination order rather than first. Work through supply pressure, filter condition and injector test results before committing, and where the pump does turn out to be at fault, the question that follows is what damaged it, since a replacement has no more tolerance than the original. Recording supply pressure and filter condition at the time saves repeating the whole elimination if the symptom returns after the work.
