Genuine MAN high-pressure fuel pump for the D2842 LE builds, the 21.9-litre V12. On a marine installation the fuel system faces a problem road vehicles largely avoid: tanks breathe humid air, condensation forms and settles, and diesel supports microbial growth at the fuel-water interface. The resulting sludge blocks filters and the acidic environment attacks metal surfaces. The water separator is therefore the pump's primary protection and not an optional refinement, and draining it belongs on a routine schedule. Where a boat has stood over a season, what is sitting in the bottom of the tank is worth investigating before an expensive pump is fitted above it. Pumping off the tank bottom is unglamorous work that protects the single most expensive component in the fuel system.
