Genuine MAN high-pressure fuel pump for the D2862 LE463, LE422 and D2868 LE433. On the larger V engines the injection system feeds twelve or eight cylinders from one pump, which makes its condition a whole-engine matter rather than a cylinder-specific one. The diagnostic consequence is useful: a fault affecting every cylinder points upstream to the pump, the filters or the supply, while a fault affecting one points at that cylinder's injector or its circuit. Establishing which pattern is present before dismantling anything narrows the search considerably and is done by reading exhaust temperatures or by a cylinder cut-out test rather than by inspection. A cylinder cut-out test needs no special equipment beyond the ability to disable one injector at a time, and it answers the question directly.
