Genuine MAN injection pump for the D2842 LE builds, the 21.9-litre V12. The defining feature of a diesel injection pump, and the one that explains most of its failures, is that it lubricates itself on the fuel it is pumping rather than on engine oil. Clean diesel has just enough lubricity to keep the plungers and barrels apart; water displaces that film directly, and particulate contamination abrades the surfaces it was protecting. That is why water in the fuel damages a pump , and does more than foul a filter, and why the failure propagates — metal shed by a wearing pump travels downstream at injection pressure and reaches the injectors. A pump failure is rarely a pump-only repair by the time it is diagnosed.
