Genuine MAN injection pump for the D2848 LE builds. Timing the pump to the engine is the step that determines whether an otherwise correct installation runs properly. Injection that begins too early raises peak cylinder pressure and produces a hard, knocking combustion that stresses pistons and bearings; too late wastes fuel, produces smoke and loses power. The setting is made against marks and a specified procedure rather than by ear, and on engines of this generation it usually involves establishing a defined position on the pump drive relative to crankshaft position. Have the figures and the method to hand before the pump goes on, since correcting the setting afterwards means disturbing the installation again. Record the timing figures in the engine log once set, since the next person to disturb the pump will otherwise start from nothing.
