Genuine MAN injection pump for the D2842 LE builds. Symptoms that point at an injection pump overlap almost entirely with symptoms that point at injectors, filters or a lift pump, which is why the pump — the most expensive of them — should be the last suspect rather than the first. Hard starting, rough idle, misfiring, smoke and falling economy can be produced by any of them. The elimination order that costs least is filters and water separator first, then lift pump pressure, then injectors on a bench, and the pump last. Where the pump genuinely is at fault, it usually shows on more than one cylinder at once, which is a useful distinguishing sign. Pyrometer readings per cylinder, where they are fitted, shorten that elimination considerably by showing which cylinders are affected.
