Filter condition on the fuel side is worth recording rather than merely noted: an element that is visibly worse than the last one at the same interval is reporting on the fuel or on the tank, not on itself. Sludge suggests microbial growth at the water interface, rust flakes suggest the tank, and a fine dark deposit suggests the fuel supply. Each points somewhere different and none is visible once the element is discarded.
