Genuine MAN injection nozzle for the D2862 LE463. Judging a nozzle by looking at it is unreliable, because the deposits visible on the tip are the normal product of combustion rather than evidence of a fault, and a nozzle that looks sooty may spray correctly while a clean-looking one may not. What identifies a bad nozzle is the spray itself on a test rig: the pattern should be an even, finely atomised cone from every hole, breaking cleanly rather than dribbling, and the needle should open at its specified pressure with a characteristic chatter. None of that is observable in situ. Where a shop reports a nozzle as failed, the useful question is which of those checks it failed. The answer tells you whether the fuel system needs attention too.
