Genuine MAN injector for the D-Series marine diesels. An injector's job is not simply to let fuel through but to break it into a mist fine enough to burn completely in the fraction of a crank rotation available — which is why the condition of the spray pattern, not the flow rate, is what determines whether combustion is clean. The pattern degrades by a predictable route: fuel left in the tip after shutdown is cooked by residual heat into hard carbon, the carbon narrows and distorts the holes, and the mist becomes a stream. That produces hot spots on the piston crown rather than even heat release, and shows up as cold-start difficulty, rough idle and falling power long before the injector fails outright. Injectors are tested and set on a bench, not judged by ear. This number is also listed as a remanufactured exchange unit.
