Genuine MAN diagnostic unit for the D2842 LE443. The value of reading fault codes before any dismantling is hard to overstate on an electronically controlled engine, because the code identifies the circuit the control unit has found a problem in — which narrows the search enormously even when it does not name the failed component. A code naming a specific injector circuit, for instance, covers the injector, its harness, its connector and the control unit's own driver stage, and the cheap end of that list can be eliminated with a multimeter. Working without codes on these engines means replacing parts in order of suspicion, which is the expensive way. Record the codes before clearing them, since clearing is often the first thing done and the information does not come back.
