Genuine MAN oil cooler module for the D2862 LE463, LE422 and D2868 LE433. An oil cooler exists to protect the oil, not to bring down a gauge reading: as oil temperature rises, viscosity falls, and the oil film between journal and bearing thins with it — so a cooler that has lost effectiveness is a bearing problem in slow motion, not a temperature inconvenience. A module, as against a bare core, generally arrives with its housing and connections, which simplifies fitting and removes the question of transferring seals. On an engine held at steady high load for hours, oil temperature matters more than it does in intermittent service, which is the marine case. Modules also tend to be quicker to fit than bare cores, which on an engine that is out of service is worth weighing against the price difference.
