Genuine MAN oil cooler module for the D2862 LE463, LE422 and D2868 LE433. The failure that matters most on an oil cooler is internal: where the barrier between the oil and coolant sides is breached, the higher pressure side pushes into the lower, and on most installations that means oil into the coolant. The evidence appears in the expansion tank as an oily film rather than as any change in engine behaviour, which is why checking the coolant's appearance at each service is worth the seconds it takes. The reverse — coolant into oil — is rarer and more damaging, and shows as a milky emulsion on the dipstick. Both findings mean the cooler has failed internally and neither improves on its own, so the unit is replaced instead of monitored.
