Genuine MAN oil pump body for the D2842 LE443. Cleanliness during a pump rebuild has consequences out of proportion to the effort involved, because anything left inside the pump is delivered directly into the engine's bearings at pressure rather than being caught first. The pump sits upstream of the filter on most engine designs, which means the filter protects the bearings from the pump rather than the pump from the sump. Assemble on a clean bench, wash components in clean solvent and dry them properly, and prime the pump with clean oil before it goes on — the last step both protects the pump on first rotation and helps it pick up. Turning the assembled pump by hand before fitting confirms it is free and that nothing has been left inside it.
