Genuine MAN oil pump for the D2862 LE463 and D2868 LE433. A pressure relief valve is part of every pump of this type, and it is worth understanding because it explains a symptom that otherwise looks like pump failure. The valve limits maximum pressure by bypassing excess oil back to the sump, chiefly to protect the system during cold starts when thick oil would otherwise generate very high pressures. A relief valve held open by debris, or with a weakened spring, produces low pressure across the whole speed range with a pump that is mechanically perfect. It is a cheap component to check and the first thing worth eliminating before a pump is condemned on a pressure reading alone. Extracting and inspecting the valve usually needs nothing more than a spanner and takes a fraction of the time a pump change does.
