Genuine MAN water-cooled turbocharger for the D2842 LE443. The water jacket around the bearing housing exists to solve a problem specific to shutdown rather than to running: when the engine stops, oil circulation stops with it while the turbine housing is still holding a great deal of heat, and that heat soaks back into the bearing housing and bakes the oil standing in it into carbon. Coolant circulating by thermosiphon after shutdown carries that heat away instead. It is a feature worth having on a working boat, where engines are more often stopped straight off load than allowed to idle down, though it reduces rather than removes the case for a cool-down period. The coolant connections are part of the sealed engine circuit and want fresh gaskets and correct bleeding at installation.
