Genuine MAN camshaft for the D2848 LE422 and LE423, MAN's 90-degree V8. Camshaft lobes are case-hardened, and that single fact governs what can and cannot be done with a worn one. Unlike a crankshaft, whose journals are ground to a standard undersize and run with oversized bearings, a camshaft cannot be reground back into service — machining the lobe removes the hardened surface layer and exposes softer metal underneath, which then wears rapidly. A camshaft showing pitting, spalling or measurable loss of lift is replaced instead of reclaimed. That makes the decision simpler than it is for the crankshaft, but it also means the diagnosis needs to be right: measure lift on every lobe and compare against the figures rather than condemning a shaft on the appearance of one worn lobe.
