Genuine MAN camshaft gear for the D2862 LE463 and LE422 V12. The camshaft gear is where valve timing and injection timing are physically set, and its tooth condition determines how precisely both are held. Backlash accumulates through the train as teeth wear, and the effect is cumulative rather than local: a small amount at each mesh becomes a measurable shift in when injection actually begins. That is why a gear is assessed by measuring backlash against specification rather than by looking at the teeth, and why replacing one gear in a worn train is rarely the whole answer — a new gear meshing with a worn one wears to match it. Inspect everything it runs against before deciding the scope.
