Genuine MAN intercooler for the D2862. External fouling is the failure mode that receives least attention and costs most quietly. On installations where the cooler has an air-side surface exposed to the engine room, dust, oil mist and salt build up between the fins and insulate them — reducing heat transfer without producing any leak, any noise or any fault code. The engine simply runs a little hotter in the inlet and a little less efficiently. Inspecting and cleaning the external surface is straightforward with the unit accessible and is worth including in a major service rather than waiting for a symptom that will never clearly arrive. Compressed air from the clean side outwards, at moderate pressure, is the safe method; a pressure washer at close range flattens fins permanently.
