Genuine MAN wet air filter for the D2866 E. A wet or oil-bath air filter works differently from a dry element: incoming air is drawn over a reservoir of oil, heavy particles are captured in it, and the air then passes through a mesh that the oil mist wets. The arrangement is serviceable indefinitely rather than replaced — the oil is drained, the bath cleaned and refilled — which is why it persists on engines working in dirty conditions. The oil level in it is a maintenance item.
