Genuine MAN torsional vibration damper for the D2866 E in-line six. Dampers are among the few engine components with no useful failure symptom: the rubber or viscous element inside loses its damping capacity through heat ageing and cumulative work, and nothing about that process announces itself through a noise, a leak or a gauge reading. What can be seen from outside is limited but worth checking — the element bulging, cracking or showing a witness mark where the outer ring has crept round relative to the hub, and on viscous types any sign of fluid loss or a distorted casing. None of those are present in the majority of dampers that have simply gone hard with age. Anyone working from an older parts list should confirm the current number for this application before ordering, since this engine's damper has been revised.
