Genuine MAN piston assembly for the D2866 E at a 128.00 mm nominal with a 0.20 mm undersize designation. Stepped piston sizes exist because cylinders are reclaimed rather than simply replaced, and the piston has to correspond to the finished dimension of the cylinder it will run in. What that means in practice is that nobody should order a stepped piston from a catalogue without a measurement in front of them: the engine model narrows the choice to a family, and only the cylinder itself determines which member of that family is correct. Where the engine has been rebuilt before, the existing pistons carry their own size markings and are the quickest route to the answer. Where they do not, the machine shop's measurement after boring is the figure to order against, and it is worth waiting for.
