About this part
Genuine MAN piston for the D2842 and D2848. A piston seals its cylinder through the ring pack rather than through its own body: the rings hold compression above and keep combustion gas out of the crankcase below, and the piston's job is to carry them and transmit the force. That distinction explains the symptoms of wear. Worn or stuck rings let gas past into the crankcase, raising crankcase pressure and producing blow-by, and let oil past in the other direction into the combustion chamber. The result is blue smoke, rising oil consumption and falling compression appearing together rather than singly — which is why any one of those symptoms on its own usually points somewhere else and the combination points here.
