The rotor is the alternator's rotating field: current reaches its winding through slip rings, and those rings wear together with the brushes that ride on them. That pairing is the practical point — brushes are usually renewed first because they are cheap, and if the rings underneath are grooved the new brushes will not restore output for long. Inspect both surfaces before deciding which kit the machine actually needs.
