Genuine MAN starter rated 24 V at 7 kW for the D2862 LE463 and related engines. The power rating is matched to the engine's cranking requirement, which is a function of displacement, compression and the oil it has to turn when cold — so fitting a lower-rated unit produces an engine that starts adequately in summer and struggles in winter. On a marine installation that margin matters more than on a road vehicle, since a failure to start is a different kind of problem at sea. Match the rating rather than accepting a physically compatible substitute. Where an engine has become reluctant to start only in cold weather, an under-rated starter fitted at some point is worth ruling out.
