Genuine MAN crankcase for the D2862 LE422. Corrosion rather than mechanical damage is what ends many marine crankcases, and it works from the coolant side outward: a closed circuit run with plain water, with an antifreeze concentration below specification, or with inhibitors long past their life corrodes the internal passages steadily and invisibly. By the time it shows externally the casting is usually beyond saving. That is the strongest practical argument for coolant maintenance on a marine diesel — the component protected by correct coolant is the most expensive one in the engine. A refractometer check and an inhibitor test once a season cost almost nothing beside the casting they protect. Coolant that has been in service beyond its inhibitor life looks entirely normal, which is precisely why testing rather than inspection is the check that matters.
