Genuine MAN crankcase assembly for the D2842 LE443, the 21.9-litre V12. The crankcase is the casting the entire engine is built around: cylinder bores, main bearing saddles and the mounting faces for every other assembly are machined into it, and their relationship to one another is established at manufacture and cannot be recreated afterwards. That is why replacing a crankcase is not a component swap but a complete rebuild onto a new foundation, and why the decision to do it is usually driven by damage that cannot be machined out — a holed case after a rod failure, or corrosion that has reached the coolant passages. Where the casting is sound, almost everything else is repairable. Establishing which of those applies determines whether the crankcase is the whole repair or only the visible part of it.
