The hub couples the pump's shaft to the drive gear and is where injection timing is physically set — its angular position relative to the gear determines when delivery begins, which is why the hub is machined with the means to hold that relationship precisely. Wear or damage here translates directly into timing error, and a hub that has been disturbed without noting its original position turns a pump replacement into a timing exercise. Mark the relationship before dismantling, and where the hub is being renewed, follow the specified timing procedure rather than transferring the old position by eye. Timing set by transferring an old position rather than by procedure is the commonest reason a correctly overhauled pump runs badly.
