Genuine MAN injection pump for the D2866 LE401. Air in the fuel system produces symptoms indistinguishable from pump wear and is far more common — an engine that starts and stops, runs roughly, or refuses to start after filter changes or after running a tank low. Air enters through fittings on the suction side that leak inward without leaking fuel outward, which makes them invisible on inspection. Bleeding the system according to the correct sequence resolves the immediate problem; finding the leak resolves it permanently. Check filter housing seals, hose connections and the fuel pickup before considering anything more serious, since these cost nothing to examine. A clear section of hose in the supply line makes air visible and turns an intermittent fault into an observable one.
